The nature of the Marian dual monarchy

Mary’s wedding was celebrated at Winchester Cathedral on St James’s Day (25 July) 1554. According to the marriage treaties, Philip was to be king during Mary’s lifetime and the monarchy became, for all practical purposes, a dual monarchy (Figure 9). That said, Philip had no independent rights to the Crown should Mary die. He was not to exercise rights of patronage independently of his wife nor was he to take Mary or any of their future children abroad without Parliament’s consent.
